ITALIAN AIR RECORD NO EARLY BRITISH MOVE LONDON, April 10. As it would cost between £30,000 and £50,000 to boost up the Rolls Royce engine and redesign the Supermarine to regain the air speed record Britain is making no decision before the ‘ Aeronautical Federation has adjudicated on Warrant-Officer Agello’s claim, says the Star. The Italians, in order to succeed, reduced the safety factor below Britain’s, the writer adds. This is particularly so with regard to the landing speed. War-rant-Ofiicer Agello’s exceeded two miles a minute, which caused tile death of three of his colleagues, compared with the Supermarine’s 90 miles an hour. Great Britain, by reducing the wingspan, and lowering the safety margin, doubtless could beat the Italians, but it is questionable if the Air Ministry would agree, although a trained officer would be able to fly at 450 miles an hour, as easily as at 400.
