I An instance of the effect of the present ! high exchange rate on the purchase ,of commodities from overseas was provided at a meeting of the Southland Hospital Board, when the tender of an Australian and New Zealand firm for the supply of an X-ray plant to the Gore Hospital was accepted, the price quoted being £7Bl. Two other tenders were received from English firms, whose quotations were £9% and £941 respectively. The advantage to the Australian and New Zealand firm resulted from the exchange rate, which stands at £l?s cm London, so it appears that with the exchange at the normal level, the English manufacturer's prices would have been slight, ly lower than the one accepted.
