POPPY DAY APPEAL

PLANS FOR SATURDAY DISTRICT ORGANISATION Preparations are beingi made on a comprehensive scale ior the annual street sal© oi poppy blooms, under the auspices oi the Gisborne Returned Soldiers' Association. “Poppy Day” will be observed in Gisborne on Saturday next, and it is hoped that the results oi the effort will almost, if not quite, equal those of last year, when trie gross proceeds ranged above R3OO. One of the main objects of the Poppy Day organisers will be to givo every member of the public an opportunity to purchase one or more of the memorial blooms. For this purpose, a suburban canvass is being arranged for, in addition to the network of branch sales organisations in the country and Coastal areas. Many householders, who in previous years had been unable to buy their poppy blooms, bad the opportunity last year for the first time to buy at their house-doors. The success of this elfoit was sufficient to warrant its incorporation in tliis year’s plans, as an important factor in increasing sales.

Offers of assistance have been received by the Returned Soldiers’ Association from a number of helpers, ' many of whom have had experience in previous Poppy Day appeals, and there is every prospect of tile street sales being as vigorous as ever. The association has been granted the use of a shop in Lowe street, adjacent to the Masonic Hofei main entrance, as a depot for the' workers, and those who are willing to give their assistance in raising funds are requested to communicate with the secretary, Mr. W. Oakden, either at the Gisborne R.S.A. office or at the depot on Saturday. Lady helpers are assured of hearty appreciation of their efforts, ami all authorised sellers will be provided with a badge indicating the official nature of their activities.

In view of the record of several years’ (f work in the community, the Returned Robbers’ Association feels confident that the appeal on behalf of men who are enable to compete in the open market for work arid wages will meet with a hearty response. '
