DICKENS’ CLUB

APRIL MEETING SATISFACTORY ATTENDANCE There was a very satisfactory attendance at the Bit/, when the local Dickens’ Club held its monthly gathering and a round table reading of “Pickwick Papers” was embarked upon. Mrs. J. Pi lie, the president, occupied the chair, and routine business was quickly disposed of. Apologies were received from Mrs. 11. Sinclair and Mr. T. G. Lawless who were away from the district,, also Mrs. W. A. Smith, who was unable to attend through illness. A letter was received from tho Gisborne Competition’s Society referring to its forthcoming festival, and it was unanimously decided to present trophies as first and second prizes in the section for Dickens’ character sketch in costnnio at the September competitions. Tho secretary, Mrs. Clements, reported forwarding, on the. request of an exmember, a letter of introduction to the Dunedin Dickens' Club; the Gisborneite having been transferred to the southern city.
