UNFOUNDED CHARGES
CITY COUNCIL ENGINEERS After discussion in camera, the Christchurch City Council passed a resolution exonerating the engineering department on a series of charges brought by Cr. Baker, and expressing confidence in the department. This followed an independent report by Mr. R. A. Campbell, a civil engineer, formerly professor of engineering at Canterbury College, which said: "1 have examined all the charges against the department. With the single exception of a drain at A. J. While’s which was a minor matter and involved the council in very little extra expense, 1 find that the charges cannot be substantiated.
“I should like to add that the action of —— in attempting to collect data on certain matters that are no concern of his, and keeping that information for five years before producing it, indicates a vindictive spirit which is very rare among New Zealand workmen.”
