MERCER SHOOTING
YOUNG MAN CHARGED VICTIM’S EVIDENCE TAKEN (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. The young man who was arrested near Frankton on Saturday night, Christopher Niven, 19, appeared in the Police Court charged that on April 14, at, Mercer, ho attempted to murder James Pennington Bates. He was remanded till Monday. Later, the magistrate held a special sitting of tlie court fit the Public Hospital, where Bates, who is to undergo a second operation this afternoon, layin bed. The accused, guarded by a constable, stood at the foot of the bed. Bates gave evidence in the course of which ho definitely identified the accused as the motorist who shot him.
