WAIROA REGATTA

SCULLS TO POVERTY BAY GISBORNE WIN PAIRS IDEAL WEATHER CONDITIONS. (Herald Special Reporter.) In ideal weather the annual ipterelub rowing regatta for the Neill Shield and the Pair Oar Shield was held on the AVairoa River, AVairoa, on Saturday afternoon. The former shield was annexed by Ihe Poverty Bay club and Die latter by the Gisborne club. The regatta attracted a considerable amount of interest and was watched by a large number of AVairoa. residents and visitors. In all, 10 races were contested, five sculling and fivo pair oars, and the manner in which one followed another in quick, succession was a credit to those officials in charge. In several cases the next race was in progress before competitors in the last had had a chance of getting on I of their boats. A mong the visitors were many Napier and Gisborne people, a number of whom lmd planned to be in AVairoa, for the regatta, for part of their Easter holiday.-.

In the senior races the distance, rowed was K miles, in the junior 1$ miles, and in all the others one mile. When the races were held the tide was on the ebb and all began up the river and finished at the top end of the town. The river provided an excellent course and competitors had no occastion to be troubled by an insufficiency of space.

The points allotted were 3 for a win in the seniors. 2J in the juniors, and 2 in the remainder of the events. No consideration was given to seconds or thirds.

The points gained by each club were as follow:—

Sculls. —Poverty Bay: Maiden, 2; Youths’, 2: total 4. Napier: Senior, 3; total, 3. AVairoa: Junior, 2J; total, 21. Gisborne: 30-stone, 2, total 2. .Pairs. —Gisborne: Junior, 21; Maiden, 2; Youths’, 2; total, 6£. Napier: Senior, 3; total, 3. Poverty Bay: 10-stone, 2; total, 2. AVairoa: total, 0.

! Following were the officials: I Judges, Messrs. A. Kirk and C. W. Muir; starter, Mr. ,T. AVebb; umpires, Messrs. G. H. Sceats, H. Linstrom, D. Jones and J. S. Gilligan; call steward, Mr. A. E. Gay; clerk of scales, Mr. C. N. Wallis. During the afternoon selections were given between races by the i AVairoa Band, which was in attendi a nee. In the evening a dance was held al Osier’s Hall in honor of the visitors. SPELLING RACES Senior Singles.—AV. Turner (Napier), jl; K. Craror (Gisborne), 2; J. Packman (Poverty Bay), 3. Throe boats i took ’part in this race, no entry being i received from AVairoa. Packman drew j Iho inside course on the opposite side | of the river to the town, but as the I rowers were sighted rounding the i bond in the course, half a mile from ! the start, it was seen that he had not been able to turn his position into an advantage, for Turner then had a slight lead. Crater, who had replaced I). Coates, was going well and was close up to Packman. From this stage l on the Napier oarsman had no ditfi- [ cully in maintaining his lead, and after ; rowing easily down the straight, he quickened his stroke about 100 yards i from the finish ami passed the post 1 with four lengths to spare. At one period Turner was strongly challenged bv Packman, but he faded out of the ■ picture when he had more than a quarter of a mile to go, and was beaten by Crater by half a length, The Gisborne oarsman appeared to be well out of the picture, and about a quarter of a mile past the bend, he took the middle. In the last half a mile, however, he picked up a great deal of lost: ground, and over the last 300 yards he came away well to defeat the Poverty Bay sculler. Packman was ! done at the finish, having made the : pace too fast in the early stages of tlierace.

Junior Singles. —W. .1. Hole (AVairoa), 1; J. Barrett (Poverty Bay), 2; R. Hanna (Gisborne), 3; D. Miij (Napier), 4. The four boats all got. away together and on the bend there was little between 'them. Mill then drew away, but after going some distance he fell back, having put on the pace too soon. At this stage AVairoa event out into the lead and stayed there until the finish, winning by H lengths. A great tussle between Poverty ‘Bay and Gisborne was seen in the last 300 yards. Barrett, steered an erratic course, which lost him some ground, but Hanna made a great •effor.t and was beaten by only 6ft.. The Napier beat was one length back, after being in a fairly good position when half the course had been covered.

Maiden Singles.-,J. Barrett (Poverty Bay), 1; D. S. Jones (Napier), 2; R. ( Bait (Gisborne), 3; H. C. Sharpe (Wax-, roa), 4. Jones drew the inside course and all left the mark together. Barrett drew out to half a length from the Gisborne oarsman, while Napier was a similar distance further back. At an, early stage in the race it was evident, that AVairoa .would lie out of the finish. The position of the boats remained the same for half a mile, at which stage Poverty Bay and Napier went up and, Gisborne fell back slightly. In this race, too, Barrett lost ground through not steering a straight course, although this was not noticeable towards the finish. In the last 200 yards he was strongly challenged by ’Jones, whom many thought would win this event, but lie had plenty in reserve and got homo with one length to spare. Opposition from other quarters was not serious, Gisborne being four longths away, and Wairoa a similar distance back fourth. 10-Stone Singles.— P. Gavin (Gisborne) 1: 0. F. Pert (Wairoa),'2; S. Franks (Poverty Bay), 3. Napier was scratched in this race and at the start the three boats got away well. Wairoa wont into tlio lend after 200 yards had been covered, but could not keep the pace up. Poverty Bay’s hopes were not bright from an early stage. The lead was then taken by Gavin, and he never looked back, winning by four lengths without extending himself fully. Wairoa passed the post five lengths ahead of Poverty Bay.

Ymiths’ Singles.—C. Smytho (Poverty Bav). 1; R. Sealv (Gisborne). 2; K. RobsQo (AVairoa), 3. Poverty Bay made uji for their defeat in the last race by winning the Youths’ Singles comfortably. Although Smytlm was left at the start, he soon mado np lost ground when ho got properly into his swing. The first boat away was that of Robson, but ho got no further than half way when he was overtaken by Gisborne. Meanwhile, Poverty Bay had boon coming on fast and it was shortly after Sealy passed Robson that Smythe passed Sealy. The Poverty Bay oarsman did not let np and won by four lengths, Gisborne having one length to spare from the Wairoa boat. PAIR OARS Senior. —W. Turner (str.) and H. Mackie (how), Napier, 1; D. Alex-

andor (str.) and 0. Armstrong (bow), Gisborne, 2; <T. S. Gilligan (str.) and A. Hal pin (bow), Wairoa, 3; N. E. Jones (str.) and J. Young (‘bow), Poverty Bay, 4. After an even start, Gisborne pulled away, but when ,100yds had been covered Napier went into the lead, Poverty Bay falling back into fourth position. For some distance the places remained the same with Wairoa rowing level with Gisborne. Down the straight towards; the finish Napier increased their lead and Gisborne, after falling back a' little, came on and passed, Wairo.a. Alexander kept up’the pressure and closed up slightly on the Napier boat, but the latter crew passed the post with a good two lengths ait their favor. Gisborne- finished a length ahead of Wairoa, who just got home by a canvas from Poverty Bay, after the latter crow had lot up on hearing the gun. Junior. —A. Lentcll (str.) and E. Dc Costa (bow), Gisborne, 1; M. Johansen (str.) and M. Burridge (bow), Wairoa, 2: D. Mill (str.) and J. Hammond (bow), Napier, 2; E. Webb (str.) and W r . Mieh-ie (bow), Poverty Bay, 4. The Gisborne crew were left badly at the start, while Napier were first out. Poverty Bay were just ahead of Gisborne, and Wairoa about 3J lengths in front. At the quarter-mile peg, Napier was still iu the lead, with Wairoa, Gisborne and Poverty Bay following in that order. It was not until this stag? that Lentell had been able to over; take Webb. The order was the same after the crews had got well into the straight, with Poverty Bay falling back. Of the three crews that were in the race, it looked as if any might win less than a quarter of a mile from the finish. From now oil Gisborne quickened their stroke appreciably, and with a line burst of speed over the last 100yds, won by a quarter of a length. Napier liad by this time dropped back into third position and Wairoa finished the same distance ahead of the southern crew, while Poverty Bay wore two lengths back. Maiden. —E. Morrison (str.) and T., Me-Cullum (bow), Gisborne, 1; N. Grombie (sir.) and M. Doyle (bow),: Poverty Bay, 2; K. Hall' (str.) and J. Gemmell (bow), Wairoa. 2; E. Drum* mond. (str.) and E. Poyutcr (bow), Napier, 4. Another good start was seen in this rgep. There was very: little difference between the boats; until a quarter of a mile had been covered, when Gisborne forced .them-: selves into the lead. Shortly after, Poverty Bay came up a little in ai challenge! but Morrison and McCulluan were rowing easily and won by , two lengths with little apparent; effort. ' Similarly, Poverty Bay re- ; taiiied a. lead from -Wairoa and pass-; ed the judges with one length in their: favor. Napier were tyo Ipbgths away: fourth. 10-Stone.—lv. Harris (str.) and FJ Newman (bpw), (Poverty Bay, 1; A. F. Allen (str.) and K. Bell (bow), Gisborne. 2; J. Chicken (sir.) and W. 35. Martin (bo.N), Wairoa, 3; E. >S. Martin (str.) and G. Deighton (bow), Napier,; 4. In tills* event a good tussle was.j seen between Poverty Bay and Gisborne. The la tter crew hud a slight j lead, after which Poverty Bay moved; up and until the last quarter of a mile,' they were on even terms. Harris then gained a slight advantage, apd despite] Allen’s strenuous efforts, be retained' it to the finish, winning by three-: quarters of a length. Three lengths] separated Gisborne and Wairoa, andone length Wairoa and Napier. Youths’.—R. Nicql ,(str.) and T. Alexander /bow), Gisborne, 1; L. Davidson (str.) and B. Franks (bow), Poverty Bay, 2; B. selean (str.) and R. Ryman (bow), Wairoa, 3. For the lost race on the programme no entry was received from Napier. Wairoa were in the load as soon as tlyi colors could he distinguished shortly after the start, with Gisborne .lust behind and Poverty JBuy third. About halfway down the straight Gisborne changed places with Poverty Bay and from then on Davidson and I-Te-lean dropped back. Rowing easily, Gisborne won without difficulty, Poverty Bay being fivo lengths behind and Wairoa four. INTERNATIONAL CONTEST (Bloc. Tel. Copyright —United Press Assn.) LQS AN.O ELES. Am i l 16.
