BOWLS

BURTON TROPHY PLAY KEEN INTEREST SHOWN Bowlers from practically all the clubs in the Gisborne Bowling Centre’s district, as well as from many beyond the confines ,of tho district, wero welcomed at tho Gisborne and Kahutia club greens yesterday, when the initial rounds of section play in the annual tournament for the Burton Cup wero played. The greens were in good order, and despite a breeze from the west that gave trouble at times, the conditions generally were propitious, and some first-class bowling was witnessed by large gatherings of spectators. Interest in the annual Easter fixture has not lagged by any means, judging by the number of visitors to the respective club greens yesterday.

Tho visiting players were welcomed at the Gisborne green by Mr. W. J. Sinclair, president of the centre ’executive, and on the Kahutia green by Mr. T. F. Crawford, vice-president of the district control body, both Speakers expressing pleasure at the number of visiting rinks, those travelling furthest to take part in the tournament being from Taneatua and Hastings.
