POVERTY BAY MAKE 133

MATCH WITH PARNELL

VISITORS’ WEAK OPENING

TIiREE WICKETS DOWN FOR 16

, was something of a sensation at the Oval this afternoon when the visiting Parnell team commenced their fiist innings against Poverty Bay, and lost three of their best batsmen, including the New Zealand representatives, W hitelaw and Vivian, for only 11 runs. Poverty Bay’s innings closed lor 133. A magnificent catch by Whitelaw in the outfield was the outstanding feature .of this morning’s play. S. Reeves, whose wicket was the last to fall before the luncheon adjournment, hit out to a delivery from A. W. McCoy, Auckland’s slow right-hand break bowler, and Whitelaw took it with one hand over his head, right on the line. After the dismissal of Carson, Robertson and Fraser carried the score on to 74, when Robertson was caught by Wilson off McCoy for 30. From then on the wickets fell more cheaply, Fraser going at 80, being clean bowled by Goodsir when he had scored 13. Boon, who had replaced Robertson, added 23, but Reeves, who partnered him for a few minutes, was dismissed when he liad scored a brace, and at lunch Poverty Bay had four wickets down for 89. When play was resumed after the ad'jjgurnment, Ward went out leg before to McCoy without contributing to the scoye, and Dow then joined Boon. The pair qarried the total on to 110, when Boon was caught by Duncan off McCoy for 23. P. Dow’s wicket fell to McCoy a few minutes later, with the score still standing at 110, and Lockett, who had replaced Boon, was joined by B. Scholium- ... 'Lockett and B. Scholium made a brief stand for 17, before the latter was clean, bowled by Goodsir for two. Lockett’s wicket went next, when he had contributed 17, being caught by Wallace off MqCoy. The score then was 132, and when Sharp joined E. H. Dow only one more run was adde.d before Sharp was dismissed and the innings closed. McCoy finished with eight wickets for 42. runs in 26.5 overs, nine of which wepe maidens. Whitelaw and McCoy opened for the visitors, against the bowling of E. H. Dow, and the former hit one. to square leg for a three. McCoy’s wicket was the first to go, McCoy getting his leg before in Robertson’s' first over, and going out for a “duck.” Dow, in his second over, clean bowled Whitelaw with his second ball, and at tha afternoon tea adjournment Parnell had two wickets down for nine runs. Vivian replaced McCoy, and M. Wallace, went in when Whitelaw had been dismissed. Immediately after play was resumed Vivian went out leg before to Dow’s third ball for two. L Scholium was given an ovation when he joined Wallace. At 3.30 p.m. the .visitor? had scored 16 for the loss of three wickets. Messrs. G. V. Lynex and G. Price were the umpires.
