OBITUARY

_ A colonist of New Zealand of over 50 years, and a resident of Haw era, for dearly 40 years, Mr Thomas G. Gorucr died in Nolan town at the age of 80 years. The death occurred in Auckland of Mrs William Baildon, mother of Mr George Baildon, formerly Mayor of Auckland, in her eighty-seventh year. I With her father and other members of the family she reached Auckland iu the ship Ganges, in 1867. One of the oldest residents of the I Ellesmere district, Mrs Catherine j Sloan, of Southbridge, died a few days 'ago, aged 94. Accompanied by her husband, the late Mr John Sloan, she arrived at Lyttelton in the ship Janaoquc. Mr Charles John Monro, who was one of those responsible for the introduction of Bugby football into New Zealand, has died in Palmerston North. Ho was born in Waimea West, Nelson, being a son of the late Sir David Monro, who took a prominent part in the early politics of New Zealand, and was Speaker of the House of Beprcscntatives from 1861 to 1871. He was educated at Nelson College and later in England. On his return from England }io was instrumental in the introduteion of the Bugby code. Prior to that New Zealand had been playing the Australian code.
