ENGLISH FIEM'SDRVELOPMENT With the advent of 1935 the Morris concern celebrated its coming of age as a motor car .manufacturing organisation, the fif3t Mdrris car~a Morris-Oxford two-seater —having been sold in 1912. The presiding;genius responsible for this progress is, of. course, Sir William Morris. When a lad of 15, he bought a second-hand bicycle out of his savings, and after a few monthi’ apprenticeship to a cycle maker .went into business for himself at the age of ' 17. Later he built motor-cycles, and ultimately turned §: his attention to., motor-cars, catering from t the first for the at that time (19121 “untapiped” class of enthusiastic but not wealthy owner-drivers, which demanded in its vehicles a combination
of economy and reliability. The Cowley Ajiwks, which are now assembling eigfltdfcrpes of 'cars in over 30 different bodyjpyles, .cover an area of nearly 82 acre*V' employ upward of 4000 , people, and have t a weekly pay-roll of £20,000. The. Morris engines branch at Coventry hftaa flofor area of approximately 450,000 sq. ft., a personnel of 2750, and a pay-roll of £II,OCO per .week. ~
