DESPERATE FIGHTING

Desperate fighting is still in progress for Pais'hihtsunien pass, on the southeast border of Jeliol which is the first barrier to Lingyuan, the main gateway to the provincial capital, Chengtefu. Japanese cavalry tried to rush the pass, but were compelled to retire in the face of a withering machine-gun fire, leaving several bundled dead in the snow.

To the north-east, a Japanese attacking force is meeting with great difficulty in the Kailu region.' which is on the eastern edge of the Gobi Desert, finding it impossible to use tanks or motor transport. Chinese despatches claim that, the guerillas again checked , the Japanese advance across the desert towards Chilifen g.

Despatches report that the Japanese are making a savage attack on a 60-mile line from west of Chaoyang to the Jeliol border, near Paishihtsu, south-west of Lingnan. Japanese attempts to take Paishihtsu have been repeatedly beaten back with considerable Japanese casualties.

Foreign observers in Jehol province state that the Chinese troops are high spirited and enthusiastic ana that civilians, while evacuating their homes, display little indication of actual fear.
