KIRK CUP CRICKET

POVERTY BAY MAKE 398 D. WELLS COMES TO LIGHT VISITORS 134 FOR. FOUR When play in the representative cricket match, Waiapu v. Poverty Bay, at tli Oval yesterday was recommenced fitter the afternoon tea adjournment, Poverty Bay carried their first innings score from 263, for the loss of 'six wickets, to the fine total of 398 runs. The visitors then opened their first innings, but owing to the failing light, were able to score -only 20 runs, for the loss of no wickets, when stumps were drawn. At noon today Waiapu were 124 runs for four wickets.

The second time B. Scholium, of Poverty Bay, put a short ball from W. Oates out to square leg, he was held by G. Mill, who took the' ball a few inches from the ground. During the time he was at the crease, Scholium scored freely, hitting at nearly every ball that came down. His score of 63 runs, although it consisted mainly of singles arid only five boundary shots) was made in a short time and wa,s a valuable contribution to the total of his sitle.

D. WELLS SCORES FREELY The next batsman was D. Hosier, but lie added only four runs before he was bowled by AV. Oates. He was replaced by D.'W ell’sj who, ‘together with E. Dow,’sent, the score along merrily. Dow added 16 runs to his fotal at the afternoon ten adjournment, in all making 42 runs, when tie was dean bowled by Jltiti. lie batted confidently th roughout and-gave a display of hard driving. Wells was now joined by J. C. Dow and again the Waiapu bowling was attacked. Facing the bowling of G. Mill, Dow sent a Juill into the hands of Liulbrook and was dismissed for 10 runs. LAST WICKET STAND Poverty Bay’s last batsman was AL Sharp, who, with Wells, made a fine last-Wicket stand, taking the score from 328 runs to 398. Both batted confidently and as a result of their efforts -placed their team in a sound position. At 19 runs Sharp’s bails were scattered by Barton, leaving Wells to carry his bat with 81 runs to his credit. 'Wells was vigorous from flic beginning of his inniiigs, and although he scored mainly singles for some time, he reached ihe boundary on several occasions when he found himself properly established. Of the nine fours he scored, four were hit in succession, another being separated by a single. The bowling averages for Waiapu as a whole were not good, and there were numerous changes in the bowlers. The most destructive was AV. Oates, with five -wickets, but his average was 31 runs. ‘Barton took two wickets for 30 runs, while the remaining batsmen were accounted for by P. Hati, G. Mill and Tuheke.

AVqiapu’s opening batsmen wore G. Alill and J. Moody, but neither was able to secure much of a score before the light failed. Runs came slowly, the Poverty Bay bowling being treatedcautiously. Out of seven overs J. C. Dow sent down three maidens, and E. James two out of three overs, and G. N. Lockett one out of three. FREQUENT BOWLING CHANGES When play was resumed to-day at 9.45 a.m. the weather was overcast, with rain threatening. The opening batsmen, G. Alill and J. Moody, went to the; creases- again, but for some time runs came slowly. Poverty Bay adopted the policy of making frequent changes in the bowling and this was successful in keeping the runs down. Later on, however, there was an improvement in the rate of scoring. Alill added 11 runs to his score at the conclusion of play yesterday afternoon before he sent a ball into the hands of J. 0, Dow, off the bowling of M, Sharp, his total being 16 runs. His partner, Moody, was also dismissed after play had been in progress for a short time. He was clean bowled by E. Dow when he had 24 runs to his credit. V. Akers and J. Oates replaced them, but the latter was able to score only eight runs before he was dismissed by J. C. Dow. J. Mill was the next man in but lie, too, lost his wicket before he was able to reach double figures, being caught- by D. Wells off the bowling of E. Dow when he had made nine runs. Aleanwhile Akers, who was joined by F. W. J. Fox, ivas batting cautiously and slowly adding to his' score.' At noon Akers was 29 runs, not out, and Fox 10, not out. The umpires wore Messrs. R. Ilalliday find F. J. Aface. Details:—
