YOUTHS REMANDED
.CHARGED WITH THEFT Arrested this .afternoon by Detective McLeod and Plain-clothes Constable King, two youths appeared before Mr. C. Blackburn, J.P., in the Police Court at. 3 p.m., charged with theft, and were remanded until Friday, their names being suppressed in the meantime. .The charge was of stealing yesterday 2s in money, ail overcoat, two pairs of slippers, and qn alarm (clock, to. the total value of JG4, thjq property of James Hall. In applying for a remand until Friday, Detective McLeod explained that it was necessary for the police to make further inquiries concerning tho accused, Mr, L. T- Bnrnard, in applying for bail and; the suppression, of the name of one of the accused, for whom he appeared, mentioned that the boy was the son of people carrying on business in Gisborne. . , , A. similar, application was made by the other, accused, who was not represented bv counsel.
Detective McLeod recommended that in his case bail should ’be made substantial if it were granted at all, as he was a stranger to tho town, and had no fixed abode. The accused stated that if bail were granted to enable him to secure wit, nesses and counsel, ho was sure lio would be able to satisfy the court on Friday that he had nothing whatever to do with the matter.
The remand was granted, and bail was fixed in respect of each accused in the sum of £SO in his own recognisance, and one surety of an equal amount.
