The North Island tennis championships were virtually concluded to-day in ideal weather,* >C. E, Malfroy wrested the men’s singles title from th'p holder, R. A. Gourt. The loser played a good steady game, but was not in Malfroy’s class. Miss Whyte retained the ladies' title against Miss Howell, who was defeated after a closely-contested second set. Following are the results of tho championship events:— -Men’s Singles.—Fourth round: Lowry d. Barrer, 6—3, 6—2, 7 —5; Malfroy d. Ferkins, 6—3, 6—2. Semifinal: Court, d; Coombc, 6—4, 3—7; 6 —2; Malfroy d. Lowry, B—6, 7 —5. Final: u. E. Malfroy (Wellington) d. R. A. Court (Hawke's- Bay), 9—7, o_2, 6—2. Men’s Doubles. Semi-finals: Hawkesworth and G. A. Pearce d. Barrer and A’Court, 6—l, 6 —l; Coombc and E. S. Pearce d. Court 1 and K. Dyer, 6—o, 6—3. Final: D. C. Goombe (Manuwatu) and E. A. Pearce (Wellington) d. P. Hawkesworth and G. A. Pearce (Otago), I—6,1 —6, 5 —7, 6—3, 6—2, 6—2.
Ladies’ Singles.—Semi-finals: Miss Howell d. Miss Bell, 6—3, 6—3; Miss Whyte d. Miss M. Rutherford, (5—3, 3—6, 7—5. Final: Miss M. Whyte (Wellington) d. Miss N, Howell (Hawke’s Bay), 6—o; 9—7.
