RACING CONTROL IN STATE LIVELY EARLY MEETINGS SYDNEY, Jan. 20. The Australian Jockey Club has at last attained honor and distinction. It has been given complete control of racing in this State. The dub will have about 450 dubs racing under its jurisdiction, and about 12,000 horses, giving the people a' run for their money. This is the. largest organisation in racing in the world. There will be more than £500,000 for distribution in stakes during the year. Sydney has always been eclipsed by the Melbourne Cup, and probably always will be. But it lias some records. Randwick, although it is nearing it's century of racing, was not the first racecourse. In 1834 it was called the new course on Botany road. * To Parramatta belongs the honor of having the first real meeting on April 30, 1810, the chief event being a race between Parramatta and Belfast. Proceedings appear to have been somewhat lively. In between the horse race there was code fighting, wheelbarrow racing and jumping in sacks. The great event of the day was flic race for the currency lassies, flic prize for which was enough calico to make a chemise. This prize was donted by a publiaen, with the stipulation that it was to be run for by “three vestals of thecurrent order.” Sydney’s first race meeting came a few months later, and was held in Hyde Park. The racing lasted for tln'ee days, with a ball at. the finish. From the officers’ races (73rd Regiment) came the Sydney Turf Club, organised in 1825. It was a long time before the S.T.C. was merged in the A.J.O. But it had to come when various places commenced to assume airs and there was no recognised authority in racing. The Australian Jockey Club was established in Sydney on April 23, 1828. It was better known as the Governor’s (Darling) club, and the meeting, was called the Governor’s Club’s meeting. The meetings were held at Parramatta. But in 1832 the Governor sanctioned a reserve on the Botany road for a new racecourse, and authorised the loan of 20 laborers to assist in its formation. So even the tales of the system come into the history of Rundwick, for this was the course they cleared. At last it has attained the height of its ambition, the control of all racing within, its province. For many years its aristocratic birth precluded it. from enjoying popular favor.

RACING INCIDENT

TILLY PROHIBITED .FROM STARTING SYDNEY, Jan. 16. The lilly Jeanie McNish, into whoso age an inquiry was begun some time ago, was not allowed to start in the Berala Handicap at Warwick Farm races to-day, although she appeared in tho list of starters in the race books. (' Jeanie McNish was in her stall at the bourse, and was ready to take her place at the. post, when the stipendiary stewards issued a report that they had rejected her entry under a rule which sets out that all nominations or entries are subject to the approval of the committee or stewards of clubs, who may decline to receive, and at any time after having received reject, any such nominations or entries without giving any reason for so doing. If a rejection is made tho fees paid in respect thereof shall be refunded.

The report of the stewards into the age of the filly has been forwarded to the A.J.C. committee, and it is understood that following this the owner of the filly was informed ho could nominate Jeanie McNish. This he did, and all the necessary fees for her to start in the Berala Handicap were paid. Expense was also incurred in taking hello the course and the engagement of a jockey, and the decision of the stewards at 'the last moment to reject her entry came as a surprise. The owner then scratched his candidate.
