BRITAIN AND FRANCE

BOTH HARD AT WORK FIGHTING THE DEPRESSION SYDNEY, .lau. 5. Air. E. Lorton, of the legal firm of Morgan J. O’Neill, Lorton, and Links, returned to Sydney yesterday, after an absence of four years in Europe. Air. Lorton -said that, industrially, Franco -was putting forward great efforts to rehabilitate herself, particularly in the textile trade. These efforts included a consolidation of interests so as to reduce overhead cosits of manufacture, the installation of new machinery, improved staffing arrangements, and an intensive selling campaign. Mr. Lorton added that., without doubt, France would, in the near future, regain her old pre-war industrial position, and strengthen it. Referring to England,‘ Mr. Lorton said that few people here seemed to realise the. gravity of the economic crisis from which sho was surely, though very slowly, emerging. . Her complete recovery would be a tedious process, and, to him, it appeared that there wore bound to be set-backs, though not of a permanent nature. Tho resources- of the country were wonderful, and were fully capable of meeting the demands that might be made on them. All thinking people appeared to be satisfied with the results of the Ottawa Conference. They wore looking forward to a time when Empire freetrnde would prove to lie the material salvation of all the countries under the British ting. The indomitable courage and perseverance of every section of the community in Britain would do much to bring the country back to its premier position among the nations of the world.
