The first Ilawke Cup cricket challenge match of the season commenced at Hamilton to-day between South Auckland and Taranaki (challengers). The wicket, which was covered overnight, was not affected by rain, but the outfield was a, trifle slow. South Auckland won the toss and batted first. CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Hawke’s Bay won the toss in the cricket match against Canterbury, and batted on a good wicket in fine weather. . Cromb and Merritt, bowling well, kept the batsmen quiet, and after an hour’s play the score was two for 54. Ah hour and a half’s play yielded 101 for five -wickets, of which L. Y. Brown made an unbeaten 60. Brown and O’Brien made a fine stand, both batting briskly. When he had reached 33, O’Brien was stumped off Merritt. Elliott had his stumps scattered by Cromb before he scored. At luncheon Hawke’s Bay were all out for 150. By 2 p.m. Canterbury had made 31 without the loss of a wicket.
