SOCIETY WOMAN’S END

ALCOHOLIC POISONING ADDICTED TO CHAMPAGNE LONDON, Dec. 2. “This is one of those deplorable eases of a happily married woman taking alcohol,” commented the Westminster coroner at the inquest on Mrs. Gertrude .Evangeline Stewart-Dawson, 32, wife ol a Regent street jeweller. She was found dead in a West End hotel, while her husband was taking their son to Monte Carlo tor health reasons. A maid gave evidence that her mistress was addicted to champagne, and Dr. Russell Cargill stated that when he attended the son, ho noticed .Mrs. Dawson drinking heavily and warned her of the foolishness of it, because when she was not drinking she was a very charming person. Dr. Cargill said he begged of her to cease for the sake of the children and family. He added that Mrs. Dawson complained of sleeping badly. lie injected morphine and told the waiter to watch her.

A pathologist said death was due to acute alcoholic poisoning, and a finding was entered accordingly.

The late Mrs. Stewart-Dawson was formerly Miss Peggy Clowes, of Brisbane. She went to England some years ago with her husband and one child, and had not returned to Australia, A second child —a little girl was horn in England, and this year was brought to Australia by her grandmother, Mrs David Stewart-Dawson, who was caving for the child, and who left Sydney again recently to take her granddaughter back to her son, Mr. Stewart-Dawson, jun. Presumably tho latter went to meet his mother at Monte Carlo, where she has a beautiful villa.
