WAIROA NEWS

(Herald Correspondent.)

Owing to the absence of several members from the district and a social counter-attraction, the monthly meeting! of the Chamber of Commerce lapsed fc?p want of a quorum. Urgent business was' attended to ,by the executive. Mr. Arthur Rood, a Central Hawke’s

Bay pioneer, who died recently in Wellington, left one daughter, Miss Ethel Rood, hi Gisborne.—lt was reported at the annual meeting of the Hawke’s Bay and East Coast Aero Club that during the year the following Wairoa district residents qualified for their A license: Messrs. T. Hall and Nigel Boyd.—Mr. F. S. Howard, manager of the local branch of the Hawke’s Bay Motor Company, who is on his annual leave in the South Island, is expected back on Monday. /

Arrangements are progressing for the annual sports to be held at Ruakituri on Boxing Day. This year, owing to the economic situation, a good deal of locally made toys will appear in the Christmas shop displays. The Herald’s correspondent saw a few days ago a number of samples of calendars locally produced, and they were not only artistic but highly humorous, for in these times “a little nonsense now and then is relished bv the best of men.” The line is reported to he selling very well. Members of the Wairoa Municipal Band are now busy of an evening perfecting their drill in preparation for the visit to Napier at the January carnival. Incidentally, the band is giving particular attention to the variety of instrumental music known as the quick step, and it is felt, that the Wairoa combinatioii will give a good account of itself. I lie following paragraph appears in the annual report of the Hawke’s BaV and East Coast Aero Club“ During the year a branch of the club has been formed at Wairoa with the Mayor, Mr. 7, D- Harker, as president. To assist , tiie Wairoa branch to improve its ground, a flying display was given ttijr Wairoa on August 8, resulting in af surplus of £3B being made available for ground improvements in that area, A very live executive has been appointed and it is hoped to have the ground in good shape for training purposes early in the new year.” v ■ ■ ■ A well-known axiom among fruitgrowers is “no leaves, no fruit,” but there is no cause to complain in this respect in the Wairoa district. So far tins year there is no sign of the leafhopper, which in former seasons took heavy toll of the foliage. An inspection of several orchards discloses a greatly improved appearanco in the Foliage', which is a beautiful velvet-green, and where apples and pears have been well sprayed the fruit carries a glossy sheen that is conclusive evidence of healthiness.
