ROWING

G.R.C. PRESIDENT’S FOURS LAST NIGHT’S CONTESTS Two further contests in the second round of the Gisborne Rowing Club s four-oar series for tho president s trophies were rowed last evening on the Waimata River, both being decided by substantial margins. The winning crews in these events take their places in the semi-final line-up and will represent the Gisborne dub in the Miller Inter-Club Cup series, in addition. A solid and sustained sprint at tin start put R. Hanna (sir.), Le Compte, Weir and T. Alexander a half-length ahead of G. C. Jones (str.), R. Morrison, Cowan and Sealy in the first fur long of their race. On the bend Hanna with the inside course, gradually drew away, and at the William Pettie bridge he led by a full length. The other crew spurted past the memorial, but 'did not reduce their disadvantage appreciably, and from that point on the greatci weight of the leading crow told its tale steadily. At the finish, Hanna led by a length of dear water.

Just as conclusive was the success of G. J. Jnuno (str.), Niwlioll, Gavin and Horne in their race against 1). Alexander (str.), Bruce, McLean and Weatherley. The last-named crew had shown good form in their first-round event, but their start last night was less effective, and Jeuno pulled away to lead them on the first bend by nearly a length. He increased bis lead passing tbe Trafalgai Rotunda, and had no difficulty in holding his position to tho finish. On last, night’s form, both Hanna and Jeune should be hard to beat in the semi-final round, which will commence to-morrow. There will be one race this evening, between R. DeCosta and A. F. Allen, licitli of whose crews showed pnisc and combination in their first-round con tests. Tho survivor of ■ this evening’s race will join A. Lentell, R. Hanna, and G. J. Jeune among the semi-finalists. The Gisborne club will fill in the preOhristmas period with separate events for A and J> grade members, tho first be ing a double-sculling series, on a handicap basis, and the other a four-oar event. A grade strokes will be nominated to take the four-oar crews if necessary.

POVERTY BAY CLUB

PRESIDENT’S FOURS SERIES

The President’s Fours series was commenced last evening by ’the Poverty Bay club oarsmen, the first race being between J. Barrett (sir.), Munro, Stevens, and J. Iliggs (bow), and S. Ovenden (str.), Tilly, Fitzgerald, and K. Ha rris (bow). From the start, which.was rather a sluggish one In both boats, Barrett drew a little ahead, and as the first bend was reached lie had a half-length advantage. The inside course enabled Ovenden tn hold liis own on the bend, and the positions were unaltered at the William I‘ettie bridge. There Barrett sprinted, however, and drew awav to lead by a full length, and over the rest of the course he successfully combated Ovenden’s repeated efforts to reduce his lead. At the finish, there was a little clear water between the boats.
