PIONEER OF PEACE

LORD CECIL EULOGISED

THREEFOLD GREATNESS

(British Official Wireless.)

RUGBY, Bee. 7.

-Mr. Stanley Baldwin unveiled in the great hall of the London University College, a portrait of Lord Cecil, painted by Philip De Laszlo. The portrait was presented to Lord Cecil as a tribute to his services in.the cause of international co-operation and good-will, and •' may eventually become a public possession of the National Portrait Gallery. A replica has been made for the acceptance of the .League oi Nations. * A line tribute of Lord Cecil’s work as a pioneer of peace was paid in a letter from the Prime Minister.

Mr. Baldwin said that in Lord Cecil there was a curious mixture of knight and priest. He remarked that if they placed a cowl round the face of the portrait they would have Savonarola. Lord Cecil had been a gieat idealist, and a man of ideals was bound to dash at tunes with those who were engaged in what, for want of a better term, were called practical politics. Speaking for those who might be called practical politicians, lie could say that no one ever questioned the depth, purity, and sincerity of Lord Cecil’s motives. The National Portrait Gallery was the natural destination for the portrait of a man. who at Hie same was a great Englishman, a great European, and a great citizen of the world.
