Writing off on a large scale by Stale departments is shown in a table attached to the supplementary estimates, the total being 1330,320, represented by bad debts, losses on the realisation of stores and mortgaged property, and losses by fire and theft.

The biggest item is the loss of £100,541 incurred on the realisation of securities held by the Department of Lands in return tor advnces made under the Discharged Soldiers Settlement Act. Arrears of rent amounting to £14,091 due to the same department also are written off, while arrears of interest written off amounted to £2OBB. The other lug lending department, the State Advances office, shows a dead loss of .042,825 on the realisation of securities on the settlers’ branch, a similar loss of £9,344 on the workers’ branch, ami a further Joss of £2384 on the housing] branch. On behalf of the Treasury, £51.67, shown as deficiencies on land settlement associations, was written off. Losses amounting to £24,642 on the realisation and deflation of the assets of the New Zealand reparation estates, Samoa., and an amount of £3115 for losses oh shipments of bananas from Samoa were also shown. Losses of stores lent for use in the Hawke’s Bay earthquake area by the Defence Department amounted to £2330, while this department also lost £14,549 on tlie realisation of stores. The loss for an aeroplane which crashed is assessed at £452.

Maintenance fees lost by the Health Department, amounted to £B4ll, while the Education Department lost £6222 from the same cause.

Had debts cost the Public Works Department £6470, while the penalty on an overdue account, amounting to £2210, was remitted.

The loss on the realisation of the Makomako sawmill amounted to £l3ll, while the value of stores lost, stolen, and broken amounted to £3389. The State Forest Service lost £3250 on account of bad debts, while wagons destroyed in accidents cost the Railway Department £3061. Losses on mortgages held by the Public Trust Office amounted to £5234.
