THE VOLSTEAD ACT
HOPES FROM AMENDMENT NEW YORK, Oct. h. The committee on Federal taxation of the Investment Bankers/ Association reported that the legalisation of the manufacture and sale of beer at the coining short, session of Congress by means of an amendment to the Volstead: Act could lie counted upon to bring in nearly £2.'!0,000,000 annually, in. taxes, an amount equal to threequarters of the entire income-tax collected in the fiscal year 19112. The report asserted that a substantial portion. of the proposed taxes on beer .would not represent additional expenditure by the public, but rather a diversion of funds now going to bootloggers.
It is widely expected that Congress will amend the Volstead Act. in the coming session, which will begin in December and end in March.
