PROFITS FROM OIL

QUESTION IN THE HOUSE INVESTIGATION PROPOSED (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. By an urgent question in the House, Mr W. J. Poison (Coal., Stratford) yesterday directed the attention of the 'Government to the recent report of the Royal Commission which investigated the profits of oil importing companies in Australia, and suggested that, having regard to the fact that retail juices of oil in Now Zealand wore out of all proportion to wholesale prices, that taxation was clearly being' evaded. The member added that as tho highways finance committee had already made recommendations indicating the necessity for action, he desired the. Government to take some steps in the matter.

The Prime Minister, the Rt. lion. G. W. Forbes, replied that the Australian cablegrams had been read, adding: “Extensive inquiries into the costs of the importation and distribution of petrol have already been made, and a report on'the investigations has been submitted to Parliament. The subject as;a whole is receiving further consideration, and additional information is : being sought'from the Commonwealth.”
