Air K. <S., WillMms, ■ M’P.p has Sulvised the Opotiki Farmers’ Union-that a conference with tho Railway Department’s -business manager, Mr Wellstead, would be preferable to a deputation waiting on the Railway Board; The union decided 1 to seek united action through the Bay of Plenty in exerting pressure on tlie board on the subject of freight rates.
Tlie ncting-Minister of .Employment, the lion. A. Hamilton, yesterday mentioned in the House of Representatives that it wotdd be within the powers of the local vuiemployment relief committees to make such arrangements with regard do stand-down weeks as would best, carry out the intentions of (he fluemployment Board of giving all registered unemployed' two full weeks’ pay without, work 'during the Christmas aim New 'Year holiday period. The suggestion has aroused some interest in ..Gisborne, where registered Unemployed are able to obtain relief work only on alter'note, weeks, and it has been proposed that relief men should lie given a fortnight’s stand-clown in one period so that they may enjoy the holiday pay during the festive season. The only advantage offered by the proposal, at a cursory examination, is that the relief men ma,V be able to secure some casual work to keep them going during the fortnight’s stand-down, and so enter upon the fort l night’s holiday Period without having spent their holiday pay in advance. The market for casual labor is, howevers considerably debilitated- at present* and with some 1300 or IdCO men seeking work,' the. average of successful search would not ho high.
