EMERGENCY MEASURES
WHEN HODSE EESUMES PREMIER’S DECLARATION NO ORDINARY LEGISLATION (Parliamentary Reporter.) > WELLINGTON, this day. A blunt indication that Parliament, upon its resumption in the New Year, would deal exclusively with emergency measures, was given by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. AY. Forbes, in the House, when denying that a promise had been given that the passage of the Municipal Corporations Amendment Bill would be delayed. Replying to Mr. D. G. Sullivan (Labor Avon), who said ho had undoistood that ample time would be given ■ for interested local bodies to examine the provisions of the measure, M"Forbes declared: “We will not be able to take this class .of legislation when we resume in January. It will ravi to go through now. Upon resumption WO expect to be dealing with legislation arising out of the economic position of the country. As far as legislation such as the Municipal Cotporations Bill is concerned, I state definitely that unless it is passod now it will have to be dropped. 'A c cannot take it later on. As I understand the position, the provisions in this particular bill are wanted, and the alterations proposed have been thrashed out and recommended by the Municipal Conference. ” When Opposition members protested. Mr. IV>rbes retorted: “I repeat emphatically that when we resume we will have questions of much greater importance to deal with. The Opposition challenged the Prime Minister’s motion for urgency for the passage of the Municipal Corporations Bill and three other measures, but was defeated by 42 votes to 20. - '
