Last night a two-seater car, hailing from Taranaki, camo to grief in the Waioeka Gorge. One of the back wheels camo oil", and the car skidded along for some distance on the brake-drum, but did not leave the road. Otherwise the car was undamaged, and the occupants escaped injury.
The Mayor’s earthquake relief fund is £l6l in credit, according to a statement contained in the report the finance committee to the Borough Council last night. The committee also reported that applications for relief were considered and that grants of £25 and I’6 10s were made.
The works committee reported as follows to the Borough Council meeting last night:—“Underground conveyor. — The engineer submitted the following report on the differences in cost in replacing the 12i». diameter syphon now being lengthened by the. freezing company with 18in. pipes, which would have to be found by the “council: 185 ft. of 18in. Concrete pipes, less vfilue of 12in., £.-4 11s lid; two sets of 18in. c.i. bends, 675; extra cartage and caulking, £5; total, £ll4 11s lid. Owing to the expenditure involved it was decided to leave the decision of the advisability o’ otherwise of doing this .ark for the council to decide at next meeting in committee.” —The Mayor, Mr. D. IV. Cloman. M.P., said it was not neces sary to do the job at present. It would be more economical to <lo the work now than in a few years, when the cost might be double, but the council had to consider whether it had the finance to do t) e job. , Tt would be many years before the work would be absolutely essential.—No motion was passed.
