MANY LOTS PASSED IN

NAPIEK WOOL AUCTION FINE SORTS IN DEMAND COARSE, CROSSBREDS UNWANTED (Special to the Herald.) NAPIER, this day. The Napier wool sale concluded at a Into hour last night, the prices towards the finish tending to become erratic, though with very little change on the general position as revealed in the results of the first few 'catalogues. The offering totalled nearly 29,C00 bales, of which about 4000 were from Gisborne. As suggested by the early selling, the finer wools were in good demand, and were selling up to per lb. above the Auckland rates, but, only because of the better class of wool at Napier compared with that at Auckland. The coarser and poorer sorts were not sought after, and values in many instances were lower than those at Auckland.

The market was erratic, particularly towards the close, and some very low prices wore offered. Even a few of the •carefully-classed and attractive lines failed to command attention, the demand depending on the type buyers were seeking. Frequent passings were observed, and one firm estimates that it sold only about 50 per cent, of its catalogue under the hammer.

Japanese buyers were in evidence in addition to those of Bradford, the Continent and local mills and fellmongers. Throughout, Germany was quieter than at Auckland, and lifted comparatively little wool. France was operating actively for bellies and pieces, and these values remained firm during the greater part of the sale, although there was no noticeable improvement in values of these descriptions over Auckland rates. Japan competed keenly for her requirements. and Bradford buyers secured a nnantitv, mainly of the finer types. Anything of the 48’s count and upwards sold well in comparison with Auckland rates, but only super lots in anything of 46’s and under was in demand.

Brokers’ reports appear on pages 10 and 12.

GISBORNE ODDMENTS FURTHER SALE THIS WEEK A sale of wool oddments, hides and skins will bo held in Gisborne on Friday, but the prospects, based oil the Napier values, do not appear encouraging. The lower types of wool were not greatly in demand at Napier, and unless there is an improvement in the position before Friday a low range of prices is in prospect. Brokers have been preparing for an offering of about 6CO bales of wool, 9500 skins and 300 hides. Skins have come in freely, and the offering in this respect promises to be a little more than expected.
