GISBORNE CLUB EVENTS PREPARING FOR CARNIVAL In preparation for ithe Bridson carnival to ho held at t’he Macrae baths on Saturday evening, members of the Gisborne Surf and Swdmmmg Club gathered in force last evening to contest two trial events, one a sprint over 50 yards and the other a relay handicap of 100yds. AMERICANS FOR AUSTRALIA To appear at carnivals in Victoria, Queensland and Tasmania, Frank Kurtz, 1 who represented America in fancy diving at the last Olympic Gaines, and Malola Kaiili, of Honolulu,' who also went to the Games as a member of America’s 800-metre relay team, passed through Auckland this week on their way to Melbourne. Kurtz, who is only 18, was placed third in the high fancy dive at. Los Angeles, being beaten by Harold Dutch Smith and Mickey Riley, both members of Kurtz’s own club. Kurtz was placed ahead of Smith at the American trials and be is confident that he will win the world title if selected for the next Games.

The young American, who is taking a commercial course at the University of South California, is a keen air pilot, and claims the junior speed flying record of the world.

Kaiili, a Hawaiian, is a sprint swimmer of note and a fine all-rounder. The American relay team, of which he was a member, was placed second to Japan, both teams registering times that were better than the previous record. Both Kurtz and Kaiili expect to appear at carnivals in New Zealand on their way back to America.

Eastwood ’s resignation from the post of local centre officer for the Gisborne area was received, and was accepted with regret. The nomination of Mr I. I). Bramwell to fill the vacancy was approved* by the executive. The attention of club committees was drawn to the ruling that club carnivals must not be held within one week prior to the date of the Hawke’s Bay championship carnival.
