POVERTY BAY HOUNDS

(To tho Editor of tho Herald.) Sir, —Milking a short visit to Gisborne district 1 was much interested in having a look at the Poverty Bay hounds, and I must here tender my apologies to the master for not having had an opportunity of looking him lip and asking his consent, as my time was so very short They are a good looking lot and a bit, some of them, on the big side compared with most of our packs. 1 was greatly struck with the excellent condition of thesfe hounds and the healthy brightness of their coals and the welcome (and somewhat rare) evidence of strict kennel discipline and spotless cleanliness in the kennel.

The new litter of pups, now just ready to- put out to walk, are uu exceptionally nice Jot, and the pietuie of health, and it is not an easy thing to raise pups at the kennels as they soon go off in condition and badly want putting out in the country to walk. These hounds are so well under command and so well conditioned, they should show good sport and I should like very much to see them in the field some day. I think tlie Hunt Club is to be congratulated on having a very excellent kennel huntsman who evidently thoroughly knows his job and loves bis hounds, and, 1 hear, shows good sport in the field. Horse lovers are plentiful but hound lovers few, and without tho latter no pack will flourish. I wish them all good luck and returnimr prosperity and a good season for 1955.—1 am, etc.. H. BULLOCK-WEBSTER. Master Pakuranga Hounds.
