WAR ON BUTCHERS
NORTHAMPTONSHIRE FARMERS SALES IN MARKET PLACE NORTHAMPTON, Oct. 17. Farmers iu Northamptonshire, having settled their war on dairymen, have now opened hostilities on butchers. Applications from farmers for licenses to slaughter have boon so numerous that the inspector to Brix worth District Council complains Unit tho work is getting out of control. Not only are fannors selling meat direct to the public in the villages, but they are carrying tho war into the towns and opening stalls in the market. One Northamptonshire farmer, Mr. F. A. Fairey, says: “This week 1 slaughtered two beasts, 12, sheep and six pigs, and very soon sold all the meat, at prices far more remunerative than if 1 had marketed the stock the ordinary way.”
Mr. O. E. Clarke says: “I am inundated with orders for meat, and at the present rate shall dispose of all my stock myself. Hitherto I have been selling it to the butchers at a heavy loss.”
Mr. J. M. Rady, chairman of tho Northamptonshire agricultural committee, publicly states that lie knows a farmer who, having sold a number of his poultry, had been able to buy a similar number of sheep at a little less than his poultry made. The highest prices farmers are charging are: Best joints, beef, Is per lb. : other joints, from 7d. Mi;. Fred. Lewis, secretary of Northamptonshire Master Butchers’ Association, says the public: are updor a delusion if they think they get meat more cheaply from farmers, for they sell a coarser meat with their best joints, do not removo the fat, and, with loin of mutton, cut off a bit of the breast as Well.
