LINES OF DEFENCE
BELGIUM’S SCHEME REVIVING LIEGE FORTS BRUSSELS, October 18. Important new measures for the defence of the Eastern frontier have been decided upon by the Belgian Government. They include: — A big line of blockhouses. A new frontier regiment. The restoration of the Liege and Namur fortresses.
Among other plans, it is intended that a chain of blockhouses shall be constructed to cover the Luxembourg gap. A new regiment of Ardennes infantry, stationed at the garrison of Arlan, will he charged with their defence. The regiment will bo composed of soldiers recruited locally and specially trained for frontier operations. The construction of the blockhouses will bo completed next June. The other military works around Liege are well in hand. Liege and Namur forts will be completely restored by the end of next year. Work on the advanced line between tlie frontier and the Meuse is also progressing. Other lines of defence could be pre nared in the rear to assure in particular the safety of the Scheldt and the coast. They would serve to provide for landings from shins and would watch over the Channel and Thames mouth.
