OBITUARY
MR. O. H. GILLON (Eioc, Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) SYDNEY, Dec. 5. Tip* death is announced of Mr. O. 11. Gillon, for over 40 years purser pn Union Company' ships; aged 63 years.
I-lORI WAIKARI (Hel'ftld Qoryespondent.) There passed away at Itangitukia last week, at the ago of 90 years', a, highlyrespected native iu tho person of Hoyi Waikari. Hori Waikari’s long life was full of exciting incidents and adventure. Ho was in Poverty Bay when To Kooti escaped from the Chatham Islands and committed his brutal murders; in fact, ho was with others inside a house w.lien To Kooti’s men knocked at the door. He escaped by jumping from the topstorey of the house on to a haystask. During tlio years when the Ngati-Porou visited Poverty Bay to engage in the grass-seed industry, Ilori as one of the tribal fighters accompanied his fellowtribesmen to defend the tribal honor against, the local lighters. He leaves a son and several grandchildren.
A resident of tho Auckland district for 84 years. Airs. Mary Ann GamineH. died in Grey Lynn recently, aged 90 years. She arrived at Sydney with her parents in 1847, coming over to New Zealand the following year. One of the oldest settlors of the Patea district, Mrs. Jane Hoftham, widow of the late Mr. Edwin Holtham, died on Friday in her ninety-first year. Airs. Holtham .w:is horn at Borwiek-ou-Tweod. .Scotland, and came to New Zealand in 1,864, living m Naj.uer for some time, where she married Afr. ftoltham.
