WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MOTU’S BIRTHDAY PARTY The second birthday of the Motu Women’s Institute was celebrated in the public hall on Saturday last, when a very enjoyable afternoon was spent. There was a good attendance, members of Ma.tawai and Motuhora institutes being present. The afternoon was opened with the institute song, alter which Mrs. Iwistleton, the president, gave, an address of welcome. There followed the roll call, ‘i’roverbs from Scripture,” which was responded to with enthusiasm. Tho amusement committee provided games and competitions to entertain the company, which were thoroughly enjoyed by all. An amusing estimating competition was won by Airs. Arthur. Two items on the programme wore especially appreciated. These were vocal solos rendered by Mrs. McKinnon and Miss Ulonquist, 'both artists receiving yory hearty applause. Tho drajnnlic circle Staged an amusing one-act play, “A Quiet Evening at Hume,” which seem ed to provoke some amusement among the audience.

Everyone 1 lion adjourned to the sup-per-room for afternoon tea. The two long tables were gay with beautiful summer (lowers and a delicious afternoon tea was set out. T tie two-tier birthday cake was set lyrarfc on a small table at one end of the roo'm. Tho president and secretary had made a tier each and Mrs. Richardson was responsible for the decoration, which she had carried out most artistically. Three hearty cheers were called for Mrs. Richardson.

Motuhora and Malawai institutes each wished the, Motu Women's Institute many happy returns. Mrs. Hutchins called for three cheers for the president, jVJrs. Twistletoj.l, who in turn called for cheers for Mrs. Wright, the secretary. Alter lea, the result of the competition, a Christ mas present costing not more than Is. was announced as follows: Mrs. It.. F. Jackson, 1; Mrs. IF. G. Bovs and Miss Hutchins, 2; and Miss Shaw, 4.

A very happy and enjoyable, afternoon was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem.
