BUILDING IN WELLINGTON

GROWTH OVER 29 YEARS During the period of 29 years from 1902-3 to 1931-32 the sum of £22,581,922 was spent in bpilding in Wellington, stated Mr. It. .Drummond, who retired from tljc (position of chief city building inspector at Wellington last week. That sum represented a grand total of 29,143 permit:-: issued during b':s connection with the City Council. During the first year, 1902-s', said Mr. Drummond, the value of the new work dope, was ; £273,949. The, annual figure fluctuated considerably during tHo next, 10 years, going as high as ,■£443,012 for 1008-9, but at the. end of •that term, 1912-13 j.lie total was down to £273,344. From that year there was a steady increase in the annual building bill, , as 10 years later, 1922-23, the amount invested in building was £929,939, and the year following saw it- tup the £1,000,0,00 mark. Then commenced the boom period in building in WeJllngtp#, which continued until 1929-30. when the slump began to. shop- its head and the figurea dropped £1,000.000 in one year and by nearly another £750,000 in 1931-32.
