In cool, cloudy weather, with the wicket still in splendid condition and not affected by light rain _ during the week-end, the English cricketers resumed their first innings in the first- test match against Australia. With tlie overnight score at the fine total of one wicket for 252 runs, Sutcliffe and Hammond, who had already added 140 to tlie score, resumed their innings, and from the outset scored steadily, Hammond scoring somewhat more rapidly than Sutcliffe. Within a few minutes of play resuming the pair established a second wicket partnership record for an English team in a test match, the previous record of 152 -being passed. Hammond went on to score bis sixth century in test matches, bis- performance bringing an ovation from tho huge crowd that was again present. The first three-quarters of an hour s play saw the total increased by 35 runs Sutcliffe then being 130 not out, and Hammond 106 not out, and tho total 287 for the loss of only one wicket.
