MEMORY OF NELSON

CEREMONY IN LONDON WREATHS PROM NEW ZEALAND LONDON, Oct. 28. On tho morning of Trafalgar Day Lady Lloyd, accompanied by the chairman of the Navy League, Sir Cyril Cobb, M.P., laid tho Navy League wreath at the loot of tho Nelson Column. Representatives of the Dominions followed with their floral tributes. Ropes of laurel were, ah usual, bung from the base of the column itself to the necks of the Landseer lions, arid a string of flags proclaimed Nelson’s famous message to tho fleet. Sir Thomas Wilford laid tho wreath for New Zealand bearing tho inscription : “To the immortal memory of Nelson, from tho Government and people of tho Dominion of New Zealand.” The wreath was of mauve chrysanthemums on a. green base, with a bunch of pink chrysanthemums and heather at the bottom of tho circle.

A number of Dominion wreaths were shown along the south side of tho monument. On the east side tho centrepiece was from 11.M.15. Nelson. This was (tanked by other wreaths from a score of His Majesty’s ships and from regiments which had some connection with Trafalgar. On the north side tlio central position was c ecu pied by tho tribute from Wellington—a. wreath of native plants and berries picked in April and sent to England in. a block of ice. Twenty-four hours after it was set in position half the ice had melted, permitting a dear view of the ferns, stag moss, lcaraka berries and iancewood leaves.

Tho Wanganui School branch of the league was represented by a circle of palm, leaves with white chrysanthemums and lilies. An anchor of bronze leaves, with a bunch of bronze flowers at the bottom, was sent by the Canterbury branch, and the Hawke’s Bay branch sent a circle of yellow and bronze chrysanthemums on a base of fern.
