“OLD NEW ZEALAND”
SALE OF ARTICLES PRICES PAID IN LONDON LONDON, Oct. 20. A number of articles connected with tlio early days of New Zealand were sold at Messrs. Harrods’ auction rooms yesterday. These wore tho property o! tho late‘Mr McCandlish, and were offered by his brother. , Pour water color portraits by the late Major-General 11. G. Robley were sold at' £l2 10s. These were the chiefs Tomika to Mutu, Hon. Ngatai, and le Kuna to Mea. The fourth one was of an unnamed Maori girl- All tlieso sketches were done by General Robley in 1365, as his own handwriting on the back of the frames indicated. Three other paintings by General .Robley were: A “Village Scene,” “Maori War Dance” and “A Maori War Canoe, and these were sold for £ll. Among the groups of books for sale were Polaek’s “Residence in New Zealand.” “Old New Zealand” by F. E. Maning, “New Zealand, Graphic and Descriptive,” “Maori Art, Tattooing,” Bracken’s and Alfred Domett’s poetical works, and about 100 other volumes relating to New Zealand. A total. of about £26 was paid for this collection.
