Although the Prime Minister announced yesterday morning that it was the intention of the Government to take seven weeks’ adjournment as from nest Thursday, Parliament did not show any increase in speed in its work yesterdailnst of the morning was lost by a discussion on giving B class radio stations the right to broadcast sponsored programmes. One member after another gave his personal opinion of the quality of programmes broadcast by the B class station of his own, constituency, and after a little over two hours ot this the Postmaster-General, the Hon. A. Hamilton, disposed of the ‘whole matter by informing the House that there were no restrictions on the number of sponsored programmes, although the nature of them was limited. From this, the House proceeded to the committee stages of the Fire Brigades Amendment Bill, the principal provision of which enables metropolitan fire districts to be established. Little time was spent on the Cook Islands Amendment Bill, transferring tho control of Nine from the Cook Islands Department to the External Affairs Department, but when the Native Land Amendment Bill came up there was a lengthy discussion, at the conclusion of which the Native Minister, Sir Apirana Ngata, vigorously defended his actions in Maori land development. a speech which had the unusual result of being followed by appreciative references bv the acting-Leader of the Opposition, Mr. M. J. Savage. Tbe third reading stage of the Fire Brigades Amendment Bill had just commenced when the adjournment was taken.
