Good Hunting, a Gisborne-owned runner, was made a good favorite for the concluding event, the Hokio Hack Handicap, at the Levin meeting on Saturday, but lie was never a possibility, and the support accorded him made a good price for the winner, Arena. * * ft * The New Zealand mare, .White Wings, a sister to Agrion, who competed unsuccessfully in Sydney a little while ago, has been letired. She is to be mated with Pantheon, and as she was a winner in the Dominion, the probabilities arc she will throw something speedy. * * * * The jumper Claremoro is again working on the tracks after a period of hill work. He was sore after competing at tiie Auckland Racing Club's spring meeting, but he lias recovered, and is in nice order to bo prepared for the hurdle events at the summer carnival. » # » * The New Zealand-bred gelding Second Wind brought off a sensational surprise when he won the Grove Handicap, six furlongs, in Perth on November 19. Second Wind has figured prominently in long-distance races, having won two Williamstown Cups and gained second place to Phar Lap in the Melbourne Oup in 1930. He carried 10.5 in the Grove Handicap and won by three-quarters of a length in 1.14 i, paying a dividend of over a third of a century for five shillings. # # # * The Gisborne representative, Aiguille, scored a leomfortable and decisive win in the hack sprint at Levin on Saturday. Dick Whittington, on the outer, and Solitaire II made the pace from Aiguille, Purse, Miss Cavendish, and Forest Stag. Aiguille ran up to the lead entering the straight and came on to win very easily from Solitaire II who hung on to beat Purse by a small margin. Dick Whittington and Miss Cavendish were close up, with the rest well back. Aiguille won impressively. * * # * The hunter Haakon was fired on both forelegs recently, and he is to be given a long spell 'before being given another preparation. In the few races he bad during the winter Haakon gave promise of turning out above the average as a steeplechaser, and it was unfortunate that a weakness in one of his legs necessitated a stoppage in his work. As he is only a young horse as jumpers go, there Is still time for him to make good, and it seems only a. matter of coming back sound after his holiday to do so. # * * * Importance, the winner of the Trial Plate at Hiccarton last Saturday, is a three-year-old half-sister to four useful winners, Autobiography, Wayward. Pride and Jaloux. Her sire, Agrion, by Limond from Waterwings, is only eight years old. He was a Derby winner and he is now in Australia. Egotism, the darn of Importance, is by Demosthenes from Conceit, by Moniform from Lady Wayward 11, an imported mare by Ladas. Imporance raced four times last season without success for her breeder, the late Mr. G. I>. Greenwood. At the sale of his stud this month she was purchased by Mr. B. F. Spiers for 70 guineas, and was placed in the stable of A. S. Ellis.

Nothing very strenuous has been exacted from Chief Cook since ho armed at Ellerslie, but he is thriving on the useful work he is being allotted, and I. W Scally will soon be moving him along faster. Chief Cook is a robust tvne who thrives on work and racing.

The hurdle race at Levin was a screaming farce, reports the DominionThe favorite, Manifesto, made a big attempt to run off at the second fence, and succeeded at the third. Headland s rider, then in the lead, lost his irons, and eventually fell off at the second last fence. This left Day Lass to win by half a furlong from Taura Lad, with Bright Song a bad third. Both the latter pair had jumped fences almost standing earlier in the race. Araios refused down the baiek, hut eventually completed the. course for fourth. Headland would have won comfortably, even with bis mishap, had his rider stuck on him, and there was no merit at all in the other four. • * # * Tout le Monde was responsible for another impressive winning performance last Saturday, and taking his last three races into mil si deration, which have, resulted in two wins and a second placing, ho has struck the form which was expected of him at the earlier spring meetings. 'Hie substantial price he was allowed to pa.v was one of the day’s surmises. but this was due to the faist that he failed badly in soft going, both atDunedin and Trentham, in October, and it, was not thought that he would handle the wet surface in Saturday’s race. He not only made liirht work of his task, but. was going right away over the final stages, and was little distressed on returning. Ho will now he a useful second string in the Auckland Cup for Dr. Lonisson. who will also probably be represented by f!a-v Crest, and with the light impost the Limond gelding is likely to get he will enter into early calculations for the big two-mile race. Tout le Monde is also included in the. list for the Great Northern Derby, but his programme as-far as that classic is concerned will depend on the strength of the likely opposition.
