CRUDE-OIL ENGINE

-- FOR GRAF ZEPPELIN t j TRIALS TO BE MADE | MUNICH* Oct. 9. I The Maschinenfabrik-Augsburg-N urnberg, the well-known Augsburg engineering concern, has begun the construction of a special 10C0 lap. Diesel crude-oil engine which is to- be installed experimentally in the airship Graf Zeppelin. This new engine is the outcome of laboratory experiments and factory tests, extending over a number of years, which were carried out at the M.A.N. works at Augsburg, and were mainly concerned with overcoming the great difficulty of weight. It has at last been found possible to construct, a crude-oil Diesel engine which does not exceed the weight of a carburettor (combustion) engine, and in which, it is claimed, the danger of lire or explosion i,s practically eliminated, while running costs can be reduced to one-third. After the Zeppelin engine is completed the Augsburg works intend to construct a variety of types of crude-oil engines suitable for tractors, motor cars, and locomotives.

Auckland. —December (3: Arrived, Canadian Leader, 6.35 a.m., from Montreal. Though it is of very light construction, the square turret on Hall’s building on the corner of Gladstone road and Peel street is being demolished to minimise earthquake risk, and by to-morrow another Gisborne landmark will have disappeared, and the building will assume the severely square lines adopted for most business houses in the town since the earthquakes. The turret has served no useful purpose for a great many years, but townspeople, to whom it is a familiar sight, will miss it just as much as they miss the Post Office tower. Tjho building, which was known as Arch. Clark’s building until recent rears, when it came into the hands of Mr. Fred. Hall, suffered fairly severely in the earthquakes of last year, and the parts of the parapet on the Peel street frontage which had not collapsed were removed, and the height of the oarapet reduced to the minimum. It has now been decided to reduce the oarapet on the Gladstone road frontage to conform with that on the Peel street side, and the work has already been commenced. The turret is of brick for a few feet up. but above that it is only of light woodwork, faced with imitation masonry, and the demolition of it will not be a very difficult matter. Tin.work is being carrier»out under a contract let to Mr, F. Goodman,.
