The weather is tine, cool, and cloudy for the commencement of the first test match between England and Australia. The curator of the ground says the wicket is in splendid condition. Paynter is twelfth man for the tourists and Bird for Australia. Woodfull won the toss, and accompanied by Ponsford opened Australia’s first innings.
The Australian captain, however, did not last long, being dismissed after scoring seven only, the total having just passed double figures.
