Mv. W. 11. Scott, who bad been on the Hastings branch staff of Messrs. Williams and Kettle, Limited, for 33 years, and Mr. M. Officer, who had been on the Hastings staff for 27 years, were met hy the remainder of the staff on the occasion of their retirement and accorded a send-off. Col. Bernard Cyril Fi’eyberg, V.C.. D. 5.0., G.M.G., has been appointed General Staff Officer at the War Office, and will enter upon his new appoint nient next year, a Press Association message states. Freyberg have taken something of the color of a legend. A magnificent athlete and an especially powerful swimmer, Col. Freyberg served in the early years of the Great War with the Hood Battn., Royal Naval Division, and exemplified his swimming powers and courage in the exploit that first gained him prominence during the Gallipoli campaign. He later reached the rank of Brigadier-General, commanding a. brigade of the 29th Division. He was nine times wounded, gained the coveted Victoria Cross and the D. 5.0., with two bars, and other honors of military life almost showered upon him. After the war, lie served with the Queen’s West Surrey Regt., gaining his permanent majority in 1927. and eventually was posted to the Grenadier Guards. In 1922 he married the widow of the late Hon. Francis Walter McLaren, and lias since made his headquarters in London. Col. Freyberg was born in London 42 years ago. and came to New Zealand as a young boy, being educated at Wellington College. After his war service, he continued Ins studies, and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, from St. Andrew’s Utiivev.iity, in 1922.
