FUNERALS OF MAORIS
COLLECTION OF EXPENSES „ (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Twenty funeral directors in various parts of the North Island have petitioned in the House, through Mr. D. W. Coleman (Labor, Gisborne) for an amendment of the Native Land Act. They have experienced great difficulty in collecting fhneral expenses of Maoris because death duties and succession duties are a first charge on the estate, but there is no such provision in respect to funeral expenses. Consequently, the Native Land Court judges, though they may feel an obligation to discharge this expense, cannot enforce any order on the deceased’s estate.
