PBOFESSIONAL CLUB SOME CLOSE FINISHES Wintry conditions prevailed last evening for the weekly sports meeting held at the Victoria Domain by the Poverty Bay Athletic and Cycling Club. Despite the cold wind that swept the ground, a largo crowd of supporters was in attendance. A good mixed programmo of events was arranged. Several new and some of tho old members made their first appearance on the track for tho season, providing much keener competition. Judging from the number of athletes who will bo available and tho form displayed, tho success of tho Christmas and New Year meetings, so far as tho cash athletes are concerned, should bo assured. A he view of the times registered in all events last evening show that they were well contested, and in every ease tho finishes were very close, making tho work of the judges none too easy. A feature of the evening was the manner in which tho officials carried out their duties, and as a result spectators were kept interested all the time and forgot tlio cold.
