RELIEF FOR FARMERS

DEMAND NOT RELAXED COALITION DISSENSION (Parliammitnry Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Although on the surface the rural section of the Coalition, which has been defeated in its demand for an inflated exchange, is pursuing a policy of marking time, it is known that throughout yesterday members associated with tin 1 movement were “rounded up” and impressed again with the necessity of securing early Cabinet action to meet the desperate plight of the farmer. This movement 5 s regarded as particularly significant in view of the fact that the Cabinet has still ahead of it several meetings which may promise to •be among the most momentous of thenkind in the history of the Coalition. jWido differences of opinion exist as to the best method of assisting the farmers, whose representatives in the .party declare that they are desperate, and insist on relief being given in some [form or another. They are not content to let the matter rest there, and it is the intention of the leaders of the high I exchange faction to urge that relief equivalent to the benefits they anticipated from a high exchange should be ; granted by the Government. I On the other hand, city Coalitionists regard the issue as being a closed [chapter. “The banks have given their reply, and there is nothing more to be [argued,” said one member. “Tfie ißank of New Zealand is to he com pi ijmented on the promptitude with which ,it acted in allaying the feeling of unrest and uncertainty which had developed throughout the Dominion.” It is ascertained that Mr A. J. worthy (Coal., Eden), who organised , the anti-high exchange agitation, has ] received a formal acknowledgment, j from the chairman of the Associated 1 Banks, Mr J. T. Grose, of the memorial presented to him last week. The letter indicated that copies of the memorial were being forwarded to the tradingbanks. Ih view of the decision al--1 ready reached, Air Stallworthy does not. j expect to hear further from the banks on the question.
