MAORI'S BRAVERY
RECOVERY OF BODY SUPERSTITION DISREGARDED (Per Truss Assfirintioii.) RAGLAN, last night. In connection with the accident in which the boy, Athol Janies Poolev, aged seven years, was drowned while bathing in a creek near Raglan, it has been pointed out that the Maori, Tommy Wahaiiga, did a very brave thing in recovering tlie body. In his evidence at the inquest he said it was well known by the Maoris that a taniwha lived in the deep hole, and was responsible for the drowning. By the manner in which he gave evidence, it could be seen that he really believed in (he taniwha. yet despite his fears of the supernatural be jumped in, and remained in until he had recovered the body.
Dorothy May Cowley, aged seven years, said that when she and other children went into bathe, Athol jumped into a deep hole, saving he could dive. She told him it was dangerous She did not see him come up again. She went for help and told a Maori that Athol was under the water.
