EULOGIES RAIN ON AMY

ONE OF THE BEST TALE OF A CHEQUE LONDON, Nov. 20. Showers of eulogies and congratulations have descended upon Amy Johnson for her triumph in beating her husband’s record for the flight from England to Capetown. The News-Ohronicle in an editorial, declares that the triumph is an answer to those who attributed her success on the Australian flight to luck. Luck this time was against her. This triumph was due. to marvollotij l endurance, almostincredible in a woman, to superb skill as a pilot and a- mechanic, and to the qualities of her machine. She is one of the world’s supreme air pilots. A presentation of £IOOO has been made to Mrs. Mollisdii, in recognition of her success by the Melbourne merchant, Mr. A. E. Whitelaw. flow Bert Hinkler lost £IOOO through his'failure to keep a luncheon appointment with Mr. Whitelaw last year after his Atlantic flight is told by Jjinies .Moilison in an autobiography “Death Cometh Soon or Late.” Hinkler, he says, does not know to this day that the cheque was Waiting for him. Mr. Whitelaw is a wonderful man, Mollison writes. He is always giving monev to people doing anything out of the ordinary, like Don Bradman. Mr. Whitelaw said Mollison was wrong in suggesting that he was always distributing cheques. “My invitation to Mr. Hinkler was purely social, and I regretted that he was unable to accept it, but I understood that his duties prevented him. Had a cheque been wait ing for him I •would certainly have found another occasion of presenting it, but, unfortunately, I am unable- to back mv invitations with monetary appreciation of my guests’ courtesy in accepting them.”
