NOTABLE NATIVE MINISTER ' SUVA, Nov. 10. The vacancy among the native members of the Fiji Legislative Council, paused by the death of Uatu Epeli Gavjdi Ganilau, has been filled by the appointment by the Governor of Batu ■Joseya Lalabalayu Vanaaliaii Sukuna, M.M., 8.A., District Commissioner, Lau. Itatu Sukuna, who is a barrister-at-law of the IMicldle Temple, comes from one qf the highest families in Fiji After being educated in New Zealand and at Oxford lie served with the French Foreign Legion in the war, joining this ' force when he found that be could not 1 1 serve at the front with the British ! force's. After the fighting around Ver- | dun he was awarded the Medaille MiliI taire. He was wounded and sent home, ] but returned to England in 1917 with | a detachment of native transport workt ers. I After the war lie returned to the Civil Service, in which he has steadily risen, : and is the first native to hold office as | a District Commissioner.
